Sumario:A study was conducted to describe drug utilization by Brazilian retirees with an emphasis on inappropriate use. Data were obtained from interviews with 800 retirees of the Brazilian Institute of Social Security, 60 years of age and older, residing in Rio de Janeiro City. Findings revealed positive associations of increasing use with diseases and with age, which are to be expected to some extent, and suggested that consumption depends on a better economic or social situation. Findings yielded important insights to help identify possible risk factors for excessive consumption of medications. Findings are discussed in detail.
