| Sumario: | The new Obama administration must not only match the standards set by the Bush administration, its predecessor, for assistance to Africa, but also raise them by implementing assistance more intelligently and more strategically. While U.S. foreign assistance cannot solve every problem on the African continent, it does need to take the bigger picture into account. If engaging with Africa is truly in the national interest of the U.S., assistance needs to take a longer-term, more strategic approach to securing the foundations for lasting development, particularly economic growth, multi-party democracy and good governance. At the same time, it must meet other humanitarian, political and security objectives.
