ab: A study was conducted to investigate the impact of an Ecuadorian cash transfer program, the Bono de Desarrollo Humano (BDH), on school enrollment. Data were obtained from a sample of 1,306 households with 2,875 school-age children that had not previously been in receipt of transfers; the sample was divided into treatment and control groups and baseline and follow-up surveys were carried out. Findings indicated that school-aged children in households that were BDH lottery winners were 3.2 percent to 4.0 percent more likely to be enrolled in school than children in households that lost out on the lottery. Findings suggested, however, that the impact of the BDH program on enrollment was only significant among households that felt there was a schooling requirement linked to the transfers. Findings are discussed in detail.
