| Sumario: | The writer presents a theory of post-communist political culture entitled the “dilemma of simultaneity.” Using the dilemma of simultaneity, he contends that the majority in a post-communist society choose one of four value options: economic freedom/political freedom, economic freedom/political order, economic equality/political freedom, or economic equality/political order. In order to demonstrate the far-reaching relevance of the dilemma of simultaneity, he explores the post-communist political cultures of Russia and the Republic of Georgia. He discovers that Russian and Georgian post-communist political cultures welcome political freedom but favor economic equality over the liberty of the free market. In addition, his findings oppose the conventional idea that capitalism and democracy are mutually reinforcing.
