ab: Part of a special section on Internet use in the corrections field. Although not yet widespread in corrections, online education and training can offer a wide variety of courses to further staff and inmate education. For a number of reasons, problems can arise in evaluating traditional on-site education and training in corrections, but online education has the potential of narrowing the gap between the need for ongoing learning and skill-building and the availability of such programs to correctional staff and inmates. Details of what online education is, Internet use by correctional agencies, why online education will soon become a viable and practical alternative to classes or bringing instructors into the institution, safeguards that can be put in place to greatly lower or prevent misuse of access to the Internet, online education in the postsecondary context, online training, and online courses designed for corrections are provided.
