ab: A study investigated how the Democratic Party's platform on trade, which emphasized that the government should link multinational trade agreements to labor and environmental issues, affected its electoral outcome in 2004. Congressional district data on election to the House of Representatives from the years 1982 to 1994 were analyzed, controlling for financial, historical, and social factors. Findings suggested that a higher Democratic tariff platform yields a higher Democratic vote share by increasing campaign contributions but may also lead to a lower Democratic vote share as a result of lost support from its decided nonideological voters. Findings revealed a significantly negative net effect of the Democratic tariff platform on its election outcome.
