ab: A number of innovative publishers are trying to end the book industry's over-reliance on the December holiday season—a six-week window of intensified shopping that carries particular urgency in the middle of a recession. Some publishers and booksellers have adapted ideas from the sustainable food movement to develop community-supported publishing, in which readers subscribe to an independent press that delivers books to their homes every month. The publishing industry is also discovering a renewed interest in chapbooks: small volumes of fiction or poetry available in limited distribution, and often with unique designs. Some of the individual publishers developing alternative models of publishing are discussed.
