Sumario:Government intervention in market affairs grew in the 20th century to levels never seen before and the trend has been persistent. Although it was expected that governments would improve representation of public preferences and the faithful introduction of this into formal institutions and policies, there was no reduction of government involvement in the economy and it instead increased. The writer considers why this has happened.
