| Sumario: | If Lord Justice Phillips's inquiry into the bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) crisis in the U.K. is to garner valuable lessons, it needs to be thorough. Among the many documents of value to the BSE inquiry will be those involving four areas: the causes of BSE; the role of the rendering industry in causing, spreading, and sustaining the disease; the MAFF's response to its emergence; and the government's response to scientific advice on both BSE and nvCJD. The inquiry should prompt a government reappraisal about how it communicates risk assessment to the public. Details of the three mistakes made by the MAFF in relation to the handling of BSE that the inquiry should concentrate on are provided.
