ab: A study was conducted to examine China's population policy and geographical patterns of fertility decline in Guangdong, China, from the 1982 and 1990 censuses. The results indicated that fertility decline between 1982 and 1990 has not necessarily been consistent with a uniform application of the one-child population policy but has been consistent with regional development in the province. It is concluded that the observed pattern should facilitate discourse on the effect and value of China's population policy.
