      ab: The writer discusses the contextual knowledge that is used when understanding the meaning of a word. He provides an outline of the study of semantics and describes the operations of WordNet, which is an on-line lexical database for a computer in which the semantic relations between open-class words that are implicit in a dictionary are made explicit. Following this, he discusses contextualization in terms of the situational, topical, and local information embodied in contextual representations and how the ability to exploit context in order to determine meaning is illustrated in the ease with which native speakers can identify the intended meanings of common polysemous words. In conclusion, he describes some of the difficulties that word-meaning identification poses for computer programs.
