Sumario:The writers review the neuroethology of spatial learning in multiple taxa, paying particular attention to nonmammalian animals and to observational studies of naturally occurring spatial learning. They discuss the evidence indicating that the mushroom bodies of insects may be comparable to the vertebrate hippocampal formation. They conclude that volume changes in these regions during the life of an individual may reflect both developmental and phylogenetic trends, as well as important structure-function relationships in the nervous system.
