ab: Part of a special section on hate crimes in the U.S. A reprint from Poisoning the Web: Hatred online, with permission from the Anti-Defamation League. The writer discusses the forerunner to extremism on the Internet, the Aryan Nation Liberty Net, which was created by and for white supremacists and today's extremist hate sites on the World Wide Web. He contends that Internet users must let responsible authorities know about threatening, hateful, and violent material they discover and that computer industry, educators, parents, civil rights groups, and government must work collectively to devise new and creative approaches to the unprecedented challenges presented by online extremism. He explains how the growth of hate and extremism on the Internet mirrors the expansion of Internet use and considers ways in which extremists are exploiting the Internet. Finally, he outlines what can be done to combat this problem.
