      ab: A maximum likelihood method for estimating fertility from open-interval data is proposed as an alternative to the standard approach. The new estimators have lower variances and smaller biases than standard estimators for open-interval data. As a result, the new method is more likely to produce correct results from small or moderately sized samples. Further research is necessary, especially on data from countries and regions other than Brazil, where there are differences in recent fertility patterns and trends.
