| Sumario: | A study was conducted to analyze whether people's expectations vary concerning how music lyrics influence individual behavior as a function of music genre. Data were drawn from prosocial and antisocial lyrical passages that were presented to 160 college students under the guise of four musical genres—heavy metal, rap, pop, and country—and the subjects were requested to rate the potential impact of the lyrics on listeners' behavior. The results reveal that lyrics labeled as heavy metal or rap were perceived as less likely to inspire prosocial behavior but not more likely to inspire antisocial behavior than the same lyrics labeled as country or pop.
