      ab: The writer discusses the operation of different brain systems involved in various types of memory. One system in the primate orbitofrontal cortex and amygdala is involved in representing punishers and rewards, in learning stimulus-reinforcer associations, and in emotion and motivation. Another system in the temporal cortical visual areas is associated with learning invariant representations of objects. A third system in the hippocampus is involved in episodic memory and in spatial function. In addition, there are brain systems in the frontal and temporal cortices concerned with short term memory. The writer explores these systems in an effort to provide insight into neuronal operations that take place in each system and to develop quantitative biologically plausible neuronal network models of how each of these memory systems actually operates.
