| Sumario: | Although it is more than 200 years since Thomas Robert Malthus produced his argument that the earth cannot indefinitely sustain the growth of population, his theory is still widely discussed today. Contemporary Malthusians believe that if humanity does not slow down then the consequences will be dire. However, if institutions and regulations are adopted that slow the pace of innovation, then current energy sources will be used up before they can be replaced by new sources. Also, it is impossible to deplete the supply of ideas and designs. Therefore, although many do suffer the fate proposed by Malthus, they are a limited segment of the earth's population and do not represent the future of the earth and all of humanity. It is not inevitable that misery is the future faced by humanity and that ruin of the natural world is unquestionable.
