| Sumario: | The principal risk to a person's privacy comes not from government but from the private sector. This risk is highlighted by the sources of systematic and authorized abuse of personal information. A number of corporations specialize solely in the area of gathering and marketing personal information about individuals, while other companies collect personal information relating to their customers and either use that information themselves or sell it to others for marketing purposes. Moreover, there has been a growing trend in the U.S. to collect increasing amounts of medical information—including genetic records and life-style information—relating to individuals. Attempts to improve this worsening privacy situation have frequently faltered in the face of strong lobbies representing privacy merchants. |
