Greene spent his career exploring the boundaries of the superstring theory, an unproven and untested branch of theoretical physics. String theory suggests that all matter is, at the smallest level, composed of one-dimensional vibrating loops the oscillation patterns of which determine their mass and “flavor.” Greene is a professor at Columbia and co-director of its Institute for Strings, Cosmology and Astroparticle Physics. |
