Sumario:The writer discusses a wide range of social theories in an effort to offer a more nuanced understanding of money that is more attentive to the situation of money in time and space. She considers a number of modernist and postmodernist accounts of money, including those of Karl Marx, Georg Simmel, Max Weber, Jean Baudrillard, Marc Shell and Jean-Joseph Goux; examines network theories of money that offer a more contextualized understanding of money's embeddedness in social relations; and reviews studies of money that address dimensions of money's role in the territorialization of space. The writer suggests that the paradoxes that exist among different theories of money are difficult to reconcile and concludes that attention should focus not on seeking to reconcile these paradoxes but rather on foregrounding them.
