      ab: Part of a special issue on James Grier Miller's living systems theory (LST). The writer discusses the development of systems symbols over the last four decades. In the early 1960s, the dynamics of systems could be easily expressed by squares, circles, and flow links. As data processing and computer terminology increased in complexity, however, the need for a consistent system of expression became obvious. This consistent system could be found in systems science. Experience from the fields of cybernetics, bionics, and human information processing allowed for the development of an architecture and design specification for information systems and networks during the many years that followed.
