Data were obtained from a test involving seven volunteers who underwent several object-substitution masking (OSM) tests and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanning. Findings revealed that the four-dot mask used in the OSM tests, although it was spatially separated from the masked stimulus, significantly altered the neural representation of the masked stimulus, which appeared to be overwritten. However, findings suggested there is a possibility that neuronal activation precipitated by the masked stimulus lingers elsewhere in the brain.
