| Sumario: | A study was conducted to examine the effects of religion on Chileans' ideological self-positioning and electoral choices. Data were obtained from a national sample of 1,200 subjects in large urban areas in Chile. Findings indicated that irreligious Chileans tend to align themselves on the left, while highly religious Catholics tend to align themselves with the centrist or rightist tendencies of the parties that, historically, have been closest to the church. Findings suggested that the irreligious, Protestants, and religiously progressive Catholics place themselves more to the left and are more supportive of the Concertation of Parties for Democracy coalition and that class differences also affect political divisions. Findings are discussed in detail.
