Sumario:A study was conducted to investigate whether decisions about potential gains and potential losses require different neural structures for advantageous choices. Data were obtained from two samples: 16 subjects with brain lesions in the chronic phase of recovery and 30 nonpatient comparison subjects. Findings indicated that decision making is not mediated solely by cold cognitive processes and that reaching an advantageous decision also requires affective information. Findings suggested that ventromedial prefrontal cortex-generated emotions seem to play a key role in individuals' ability to make adaptive decisions in the face of risk, irrespective of whether the goal of the decision is to make a gain or avoid a loss. Findings imply that decision making under risk may rely on partially separate neural systems for handling potential losses and potential gains.
