      ab: A study was conducted to investigate the electrophysiological correlates of successful memory formation and self-cued recall. Data were obtained from tests on 52 patients aged 8–53 years with drug-resistant epilepsy, in which arrays of subdural or depth electrodes, or both, were surgically implanted for a period of one to two weeks to localize the site or sites of seizure onset. Subjects undertook a verbal free-recall task. Findings indicated that the same pattern of gamma-band oscillatory activity that predicts successful memory formation at item encoding reemerges at retrieval to distinguish correct from incorrect responses. Findings suggested that retrieval of true, as compared to false, memories induces a distinct pattern of gamma oscillations, which may reflect recollection of contextual information associated with past experience. Findings are discussed in detail.
