      ab: A study was conducted to examine in synaesthetes a behavioral outcome of the mirrorlike activity in the somatosensory system due to observation of touch and to determine whether this effect was particular to observing touch on a part of the human body rather than a nonbody target. Data were obtained from 16 Italian students who viewed three sets of movies—one depicting the subject's own face, one depicting the face of another person of the same age and gender as the subject, and one depicting a house—and who also experienced tactile stimuli delivered via a pair of electrodes place on the right and left cheeks. Findings revealed that observation of touch affects tactile processing in nonsynaesthetic subjects, and the effect is maximized in instances where subjects observe touch directed toward themselves. Findings suggested that this form of visuo-tactile interaction can be assessed behaviorally. Findings are discussed in detail.
