| Sumario: | A study was conducted to explore how human and social issues affect the work of software developers and the software they produce. Data were obtained from virtual communities of software developers, such as forums, web logs, e-mails, and instant messaging. Findings revealed that human and social issues affecting the production of software emerge from three different contexts: the software development environment, software development practices, and complex business organizations. Findings indicated that the human and social issues that affect their work are often unclear to developers or excluded by the methodology they use. Findings suggested that software developers draw on their past experiences to assess new situations and incorporate new experiences into their mental structures. Findings are discussed in detail.
