Sumario:Part of a special issue on how ethnography produces comparability. Ethnographic comparison should center on and explicate the production of comparability such that the thickness of qualitative comparison stems from its augmentation of quantitative differences and similarities, its processual and explorative character, and its demonstrations of the conditions and the limits of qualitative comparability. There is a need to alter the status of methodical critique and sensitivity regarding the traps and limits of comparison. The impossibility to compare objects in their totality or thickness should not suppress productive comparative research but rather instigate “problematic comparison” whereby learning arises from the problems of comparing and the resistance to being compared and not just clear-cut solutions. Each of the contributing articles on thick comparison is introduced.
