      ab: A study was conducted using functional magnetic resonance imaging to identify the neural structures involved when women perform difficult math tasks both in the presence and in the absence of stereotype threat. Data were obtained from 28 right-handed, female students who were highly identified with math. Findings revealed that women who were reminded of the stereotype that sex differences exist in math ability performed less well on subsequent math problems compared to women who were given no such reminder. Findings suggested these behavioral differences were accompanied by robust differences in neural activity between the two conditions. Findings are discussed in detail.
