      ab: A study was conducted to investigate the fair division of a common property resource when agents also possess private resources, such as money, for use as compensatory payments. Data were obtained using four axiomatic equity criteria; the analysis sought a “fair” way of dividing the environment's limited absorptive capacity for greenhouse gases (GHG)—the common resource—across countries. Findings suggested that developing countries should engage in GHG abatement measures but should be fully compensated for their incremental abatement costs, in keeping with the idea, repeatedly mentioned as a key component of any “acceptable” climate-change treaty, of imposing “no harm” on developing countries.
