A high-frequency adjective was followed by either a high-frequency wordn or a low-frequency wordn, which was in turn followed by either a correct or an orthographic illegal wordn+1 as a parafoveal preview. Results revealed a limited parafoveal-on-foveal effect: inflated fixation times on wordn were observed when the preview of wordn+1 was orthographically illegal. This parafoveal-on-foveal effect was found to be independent of the frequency of wordn, restricted to those cases when the eyes were very close to wordn+1, and associated with relatively long prior saccades.
