      ab: Using a functional magnetic resonance imaging technique, a study investigated the role that the posterior superior temporal sulcus (STS) region plays in the perception of social acts. Data were gathered from participants who watched an actress express either a positive or a negative emotion toward one of two objects and then subsequently pick up one of them. If the object acquired had been regarded positively, or if the object that was not picked up had been regarded negatively, the action was congruent; if not, the action was incongruent. Activity in the right posterior STS region was found to be perceptive of the congruence between the action and the emotional expression of the actress. These findings indicated that the posterior STS represents not only biological motion but also how another person's actions are associated with his or her intentions.
