      ab: A study examined the neurobiological basis of high sensation seeking. Data were obtained from participants grouped as high sensation seekers (HSSs) and low sensation seekers (LSSs) who viewed high- and low-arousal pictures. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) was used to determine neurobiological responses to stimuli. Findings revealed that HSSs exhibited stronger fMRI responses to high-arousal stimuli in brain regions linked to arousal and reinforcement, whereas LSSs demonstrated greater activation and earlier onset of fMRI responses to high-arousal stimuli in regions involved in emotional regulation. In addition, fMRI response in the anterior medial orbitofrontal cortex and the anterior cingulate was negatively linked to urgency. Finally, LSSs demonstrated greater sensitivity to the valence of the stimuli compared to HSSs. These findings suggested that HSSs demonstrate neural responses consistent with an overactive approach system, whereas LSSs show responses in keeping with a stronger inhibitory system.
