Experiment 1 utilized a new procedure to study localization, which was then used to analyze whether localization is primarily dependent upon simultaneous oral somatosensation. Experiment 2, used solutions of varying viscosity. Experiment 3, used oral movement of varying vigor, found that sniffed odors are not localized to the mouth by somatosensation alone. Instead, Experiment 4 showed that a tastant needs to be present and that increasing tastant concentration generated increasing oral localization. Experiment 5 found that this dependence upon gustation reflected the previously observed “confusion” that people show for smell and taste stimuli in the mouth.
