      ab: The launch of China's Tianhe-1 petaflop supercomputer could revolutionize the development of supercomputers. Debuted in September 2009, Tianhe-1 is capable of a peak speed of 1.206 quadrillion operations per second. The project was started in 2008 with an investment of approximately $88 million by the National University of Defense Technology (NUDT) and uses a combination of central processing units (CPUs) and graphic processing units (GPUs) to power its high-speed operations. According to NUDT president Zhang Yulin, this combination of CPUs and GPUs is a new step forward in supercomputing technology and will enable operators to use Tianhe-1 to calculate the effects of weather systems, as well as in searching for oil and other natural resources.
