Summary:A study examined the R program for automating bone cross section reconstruction. The R program is a new freely available program developed for operational freeware. Data were obtained through comparison of cross-sectional properties calculated by using the new R program to those from peripheral quantitative CT and the original manual method. Findings revealed that the R program worked as well as the original manual image processing for most cross sections, eliminated the chance for entry errors at several points, and significantly increased the speed of data collection. Findings are discussed in detail.
