Artificial intelligence: Riders on a swarm.

The field of artificial intelligence is generating models mimicking the behavior of ants, bees, and birds. In 1992, Marco Dorigo and his group began developing Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), an algorithm that looks for solutions to a problem by simulating a group of ants wandering over an area and...

ab: The field of artificial intelligence is generating models mimicking the behavior of ants, bees, and birds. In 1992, Marco Dorigo and his group began developing Ant Colony Optimization (ACO), an algorithm that looks for solutions to a problem by simulating a group of ants wandering over an area and laying down pheromones. In the mid-1990s, James Kennedy and Russell Eberhart, inspired by birds, invented the particle swarm optimization (PSO). These innovations have stemmed from the dismal failure of artificial intelligence modeled on human brains.
