Sumario:Part of a special section on offshore investment. The use of automated trading systems and the move toward electronic settlement in Hong Kong reflect trends across the region. New computerized systems in Asia have enabled exchanges and clearing companies to deal with enormous inflows of funds both from domestic and overseas investors. In addition, the implementation of these new systems means investors are more willing to put money into these markets. As well as having an impact on the level of turnover, changes in the physical infrastructure of an exchange affect the strategies fund managers employ and even the levels of volatility. The use of automated trading systems makes it possible to contemplate more sophisticated and complicated trading positions and to put them on or off more quickly. Automated trading also makes it more difficult for brokers to sell their clients short.
