ab: Kanan Makiya, one of Iraq's most controversial dissidents, discusses his new book Cruelty and Silence: war, tyranny, uprising and the Arab world. In the book, which contains details that are raw and deeply unpleasant, Makiya allows ordinary Iraqis to tell their own tales. These tales are concerned with torture, violation, humiliation, and cruelty. The second theme of the book relates to the silence of Arab intellectuals concerning the cruelty of the Iraqi regime. According to Makiya, their silence and their elevated views of Saddam were not shared by the Kuwaitis and Iraqis who paid the price of Saddam's actions.
