      ab: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technology provides high-resolution images that allow viewing of cortical detail in the living brain in exquisite detail. Very thin slices of brain can be acquired very quickly, and computer programs join the slices together and apply techniques that improve the visual image produced. The degree of the surface detail now visible using MRI can be matched only by postmortem brain examination. Computer programs allow for the rotation and examination of the brain from any angle. The availability of images of this quality permit the study of the relationship between structural characteristics and functional or pathological characteristics.
