| Sumario: | A study was conducted to examine the robustness of communication as an efficiency-enhancing mechanism in scenarios where appropriators differ in input endowments. Data were drawn from experiments with a model of the commons resource dilemma game in which heterogeneous endowments were assigned randomly with complete information, by auction with complete information, or randomly with incomplete and asymmetric information. Findings support the robustness of face-to-face communication in situations of endowment heterogeneity. Heterogeneous appropriators, when permitted to take part in face-to-face communication, substantially raise the level of rents earned from the common pool resource. Moreover, rent enhancement remains substantial, albeit reduced, under relatively severe conditions of four endowment types with incomplete and asymmetric information.
