Sumario:Part of a special section on selected contributions to the 39th annual meeting of the International Society for the Systems Sciences. The writer aims to contribute to the development of a theory of virtual organization—a means of structuring and managing an organization's goal-oriented activities based on a categorical distinction between the requirements of a task and the elements capable of satisfying them. He concentrates on the nature and inner workings of this innovative approach to organization rather than on its consequences for individuals and communities. He presents a three-part definition of virtual organization adapted from a framework he produced previously (Mowshowitz, 1994), and based on this, he elaborates the definition, applicability, and sociotechnical foundations of virtual organization.
