The writers describe the development of a customized computer software package that makes analysis of the U.K. 1991 Sample of Anonymised Records (SAR) easier. The new package was designed to make the SAR easily available and usable, to trivialize the tabulation task in a very interactive computing environment, and to provide the table design tools required for the majority of users to get the optimum advantages of the flexibility offered by the SAR. The resulting user-friendly USAR package, which was designed to be portable within the Unix environment, has a number of features, such as intelligent data interpretation, interactive table design, and fuzzy query.
