| Sumario: | Part of a special issue on social and political transition in Israel. The writer examines the principal problem areas in Israeli society and makes projections for the next 5-15 years. Israel will become a nonwarfare society that is less mobilized and nationalistic and will also become more individualistic and conflict-ridden. National security will remain a primary concern because the Middle East as a whole will continue to be marked by conflict. Israel will intensify its orientation toward the West, reducing the likelihood of integration into the region. Despite the strengthening of certain civic elements, the state will remain Jewish-Zionist. Democratization will speed up, and the process of economic expansion and globalization will allow Israel to join the capitalist core. Peace will have a varied impact on internal divisions: Political cleavages will decline, tensions between religious and secular Jews will increase, class differences will grow, the situation of non-European Jews will deteriorate, Arabs will improve their status, and women will make progress.
