      ab: A project was undertaken to create a prototype primary environmental impact assessment computer program that could be used in the planning of engineering projects by engineers. The idea was to create a system that would be used early in the planning phase of projects to identify potential negative environmental impacts and thereby iteratively modify proposals before additional work is conducted on them. The outcome would be a saving in both time and money to clients by keeping to the minimum the amount of abortive work. The structure of the system developed to solve the problem of the almost limitless combinations of environmental characteristics available for selection for evaluating a project proposal, each of which is able to assume a varying level of importance, uses a combination of an expert system shell and conventional computer programs. The way in which the program can be assembled to deal with each specific problem at hand and an application based on a report for a sewage works for Park Rynie on Natal's south coast are discussed.
