A visual search task in which participants were required to make a voluntary, goal-directed saccade to a color-singleton target was used. It was noted that the appearance of a new, but task-irrelevant object in the visual field caused disruption to both the goal-directed allocation of attention and movement of the eyes to a specific target. Analysis of whether precuing the location of the color-singleton target would eliminate or reduce the influence of the task-irrelevant onset on performance and eye movements revealed that capture effects by the appearance of a task-irrelevant onset could be overcome when observers had enough time to attend and program an eye movement to the location of a subsequent target stimulus.
