      ab: A study was conducted to explore the processes involved in the capture of the eyes by new objects: Before an eye movement is made, attention is covertly shifted to the location of the object of interest, and the eyes will typically land at the position at which attention is directed. A visual search task in which participants were required to make a voluntary, goal-directed saccade to a color-singleton target was used. It was noted that the appearance of a new, but task-irrelevant object in the visual field caused disruption to both the goal-directed allocation of attention and movement of the eyes to a specific target. Analysis of whether precuing the location of the color-singleton target would eliminate or reduce the influence of the task-irrelevant onset on performance and eye movements revealed that capture effects by the appearance of a task-irrelevant onset could be overcome when observers had enough time to attend and program an eye movement to the location of a subsequent target stimulus. The results suggest parallel—voluntary and stimulus-driven—programming of the two saccades.
