| Sumario: | Part of a special section on social science communities and the diffusion of a new technological development called Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software (CAQDAS). The writer provides an overview of the role of computer-aided qualitative analysis in Germany. He outlines the history of qualitative sociology in Germany in order to provide a background understanding of the development of CAQDAS in the country since the late 1980s. He points out that researchers at that time faced the huge problem of data overload with no advice available on how to deal with large amounts of textual data. He goes on to discuss the programs that were designed to deal with these problems—MAX (WinMAX), ATLAS/ti, and Aquad—focusing on methodological questions and the explication of the models of qualitative analysis underlying the programs. |
