They assert that when words are retrieved from memory, a network of brain regions becomes active and these regions can be regarded as the basic verbal retrieval and processing system. In addition, they argue that when a unique context is associated with the learned words and the task is to retrieve words from that specific context, several additional regions are used along with the basic system. Furthermore, they contend that these additional areas are not activated by many kinds of nonepisodic tasks that require difficult and time-consuming verbal elaboration but are almost always activated during episodic remembering tasks, even when they are relatively straightforward.
