| Summary: | In December 1999, Hong Kong wireless-phone provider SmarTone launched a service that allows subscribers to log on to the Internet using their mobile phones. The service uses a technology known as Wireless Application Protocol (WAP). Phones can connect directly to special online services designed for small-screen handsets. These new phones can open any WAP compatible Internet page in a manner similar to that used by a computer Internet browser. However, almost no WAP pages are as yet connected to the web because most phone companies offer proprietary services. The potential market is huge, but the service suffers from a lack of content and a lack of available handsets that are WAP enabled.
