ab: The writer reviews some of the wide variety of computer software and related material available for use by economists. He discusses Ox, a remarkable matrix language and programming environment that is part of a broader strategy to develop a common interface, GiveWin, that links programs together through Microsoft OLE automation. Two apparent drawbacks of the broader strategy are that C++ or other programming language knowledge is required for using GiveWin programs externally and that it is not a cross-platform approach, But OX deals with both of these drawbacks. A comparison of Ox with GAUSS and details of how Ox operates are provided.
